On November 16th, President Obama hosted a town hall meeting with Chinese youth in Shanghai, China. This was President Obama’s first town hall in China and was an important opportunity to strengthen the dialogue between our two countries. Attendees of the event came from  eight universities in the Shanghai area. During the event, the President took questions from the live audience, as well as from the online Chinese community.

PRESIDENT OBAMA:  Good afternoon.  It is a great honor for me to be here in Shanghai, and to have this opportunity to speak with all of you.  I'd like to thank Fudan University's President Yang for his hospitality and his gracious welcome.  I'd also like to thank our outstanding Ambassador, Jon Huntsman, who exemplifies the deep ties and respect between our nations.  I don't know what he said, but I hope it was good.  (Laughter.) The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the quarantine measures imposed by the Government of China in response to the 2009-H1N1 pandemic that may affect travel to China.  This Travel Alert expires on September 30, 2009. (complete text)  

U.S. EFFORTS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF H1N1

The United States Government is very concerned about the recent cases of novel H1N1 influenza that have been identified in the United States and around the world.

Any influenza is serious. Over 35,000 people in the U.S. and about 500,000 people worldwide die each year because of regular seasonal flu. It's uncertain at this time how severe this novel H1NI outbreak will be in terms of illness and death compared with other influenza viruses.   (complete text)
