April 25, 2009 – The U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai worked together with the China Welfare Institute to bring together well over 100 children and their parents from all over the world – from America to China, Ireland to Singapore – for a joint celebration of Earth Day at the historic Shanghai Children’s Palace, known as the “Marble Mansion”. Chinese children from schools throughout Shanghai worked together with expatriate children living in Shanghai to color a beautiful, massive mural with scenes of nature, build solar-powered model homes, make flowers out of recycled paper, and sign a letter pledging each young person’s commitment to protecting and cherishing the natural environment. U.S. Consul General Beatrice Camp and Children’s Palace Deputy Director Xia Yong Qiang attended the event, and the U.S. Consulate also displayed a special Earth Day poster exhibition to help reinforce environmental education themes for all present. The Chinese children received special “Earth Day”-themed coloring books from the U.S. consulate, and foreign children were honored to receive pins and medallions from the Children’s Palace to remind them of this special day.
