National Symphony Orchestra Concert Performs in Shanghai

National Symphony Orchestra Concert Performs in Shanghai

The U.S. National Symphony Orchestra preformed at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center in a concert on June 16.  The performance is one of a series of  events to celebrate the 30th anniversary since the establishment of official diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China.  The U.S. National Symphony Orchestra, a fixture on American state occasions, performed Wagner, Mendelssohn and Dvorak under the baton of Ivan Fischer.  Violinist Leonidas Kavakos, winner of the Sibelius and Paganini competitions, was the soloist in the final season concert of the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center.  The program featured Wagner's "Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg," Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto" and Dvorak's "Symphony No. 7."  The National Symphony Orchestra last performed in China 10 years ago, celebrating the 20th anniversary of bilateral ties.  Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama sent messages respectively to the Orchestra, wishing its performance in China a success.
